Marco was born on January 9 and Evelyn on February 19, both in 1964. In 1979, when Marco was 14, a group of missionaries came to his neighborhood to prepare an area where they would hold an evangelistic outreach. Since Marco had always liked doing carpentry, he offered to help them build the stage. The next week the outreach began and he decided to attend it all week. By the end of the week he had trusted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He immediately began to attend a Baptist church. At the same time he entered into a relationship with a non believing young lady…..whose influence quickly caused him to drop away from church. A while later he decided to break off that relationship.
In 1981 Marco, and Evelyn, his good friend and who would later become his wife, were invited to the Youth Group at a Baptist Church. They both attended. This very same day Marco reconciled his relationship with Christ, and Evelyn received Christ as her Lord and Savior. Marco and Evelyn had previously met through the National Sports Institute in El Salvador as they both practiced Olympic Gymnastics. Over time, Marco and Evelyn entered into a formal relationship and were later married on December 28, 1985. Once married, both Marco and Evelyn began to serve the Lord as a couple in evangelism. Later Evelyn served in youth ministry and discipled young ladies for five years.
In 1989 Marco and Evelyn were sent out from their church with a group of families to start a mission church in Zacamil. There they served as the Sunday School Directors; later directors for the younger youth; later with the older youth, and in time with the young married couples. Marco was also a deacon. They continued serving the Lord in these capacities for 22 years.
In 2010 they decided to move their church membership to Iglesia Bautista Vida Nueva for two reasons, one, because of a family bond, and two, because of wonderful friendships they had established with so many members of Vida Nueva. This same year the pastoral team offered them the full time position as the Directors of the Children’s Ministries Department. They joyfully accepted the position, as their hearts desire has always been to be dedicated to the Lord’s service full time. At this time both resigned from their secular jobs, Marco had been a PE and gymnastics teacher, and Evelyn, a college Chemistry and Pharmacology professor.
The Umañas have two children, Marco Antonio Umaña Jr. (February 12, 1990) and 14 years later adopted Evelyn Mariela (February 13, 2004). They feel very blessed with their family.
The Lord has been good to prepare them for His service. For the past 18 years they have been members of the International Association of Christian Camps and have trained many leaders. As a family they are also building up a Christian camp site in San Jose Villanueva in El Salvador. The camp site is named “Rehobot”, the same name as a well in the Bible which means “spacious”. The Umaña’s heart’s desire is for this place to be a spacious blessing for others.
In addition to being the Children’s Ministry Department Directors, both Marco and Evelyn are studying in the Vida Nueva Seminary, and Marco is the chaplain of one of the grade levels at New Life Christian School.
